A note from the editors
About the Gazette
The Lonely Hearts Gazette™ is a proposed personals service for adults in the United States, built on an old idea: that you can get to know a person through their words before you ever see their face.
It borrows the format of the newspaper personals our grandparents read — short notices, anonymous Box Numbers, replies by letter — and pairs it with modern protections: moderation, adults-only membership, and letters routed so that nobody's address is shared. It is meant for people who find app-based dating fast and impersonal: the widowed and divorced, the shy and the bookish, and anyone who misses finding a real letter in the mailbox.
Where things stand
The Gazette is in development and not open. What exists today is this preview website and a sample edition, Vol. I, No. 1, which you can read online. Prices are proposed and may change after testing. The name is a working title.
Our principles
- Honesty in print. Sample content is always labeled as sample. We will never publish invented testimonials or present fictional people as real.
- Privacy by design. Box Numbers instead of names; private details stored apart from public notices; addresses never shared between members.
- Words first. Photographs only when both correspondents agree.
- Black ink on newsprint. A newspaper should look like one.
Questions are answered in the FAQ. To hear when the Gazette opens, join the waiting list.
Personals by post, for adults who would rather write than swipe
Love arrives by letter.
The Lonely Hearts Gazette is a proposed personals service in the spirit of the old newspapers: place a short notice in your own words, receive an anonymous Box Number, and let interested readers write to you — on paper, delivered by mail, with neither of you ever seeing the other's address.

What It Is
A monthly newspaper of personal notices, online and eventually in print, for adults across the United States who prefer getting to know someone through words before photographs. Reading and placing a standard notice are planned to be free. Writers pay a proposed fee for each printed, mailed letter, because paper and postage are real.
How It Works
- Place a free notice; get an anonymous Box Number.
- Every notice is checked and moderated before it appears.
- Readers write to a Box Number on the website.
- The letter is printed and mailed to you — your address stays private.
- Replies travel back the same way. Photos only when you both agree.
Safety First
No surnames, phone numbers, e-mail addresses, street addresses, links or money requests in any notice. Adults only. Letters routed so neither person sees the other's address. And one rule above all: never send money to a correspondent.
From the Personal Columns
Sample Every personal on this website is a fictional sample written for the preview edition. Real notices would appear only after the service opens, and only after e-mail verification and moderation.
